How to not look like a tourist

tourist guytourist guy

In Cordoba I've been asked two times for directions by apparantly spanish tourists, and I've been overlooked by some horse ranch workers when I went somewhere I wasn't supposed. Therefore I suppose I didn't really look like a tourist to them, and it made me wondering why usually tourists are so easy to recognise.

On the one hand, it might just be funny to pass as a local, on the other hand it might have some very practical impact as you will be less targeted by pickpocketers or scum of any kind.

So here's my advice in order to not look like a tourist:

  1. Don't wear a backpack - all hitchhiking tourists are wearing backpacks.
  2. Don't carry your camera visible for everybody.
  3. Wear clothing according to the local custom - even if you think the weather is fine, don't put on shorts and t-shirt when locals are wearing wollen pullovers.
  4. A cheap looking plastic bag seems to be quite a good camouflage in any situation.
